The effects of group play therapy on the social interaction of mentally retarded children

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of group play therapy on social interaction of the mental retarded children in the session and in the free play situation with mental retarded peer. The Experimental design of this study was pre-post testing design. That is, For 4 subjects, the score of social interaction was measured before, during, and after group play therapy in session and in free play situation with mental retarded peer. And the scores were compared. The significant results were as follows: 1. In score comparison of DTORF, there were promotion in verbal expression of own and other¡¯s feeling, sharing the materials without directions, spontaneous involvement in parallel play, and involvement in presentation of other children. 2. In the frequency analysis of the free play with mental retarded peers and free play in the session, there were the promotion in trying to play with other children, the change to functional responsive pattern from non-responsive pattern and the change to interactional play pattern with other children from the isolation play pattern.
